Intrant Promotes Road Safety in Businesses and Honors 13 Organizations for Accident Prevention
In a country with one of the highest traffic accident mortality rates in the region, the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant) is taking proactive steps to enhance road safety within the business sector. This initiative was highlighted during the inaugural National Road Safety Award ceremony, where 13 companies were recognized for their efforts to protect the lives of employees, drivers, and citizens alike.
The Need for Enhanced Road Safety
The Dominican Republic has long struggled with high rates of traffic fatalities, prompting the Intrant to take a more active role in promoting road safety. The introduction of a Technical Regulation on Road Safety Labor Plans is a significant step towards integrating safety protocols within businesses. This regulation aims to encourage companies to adopt internal measures that not only safeguard their employees during work hours but also during their commutes.
Milton Morrison, the executive director of Intrant, emphasized the shared responsibility of road safety among the state, businesses, and citizens. By implementing safety measures, companies not only protect their workforce but also contribute to the overall safety of Dominican families and the community at large.
Recognition of Corporate Initiatives
During the National Road Safety Award ceremony, Intrant honored 13 companies for their innovative approaches to road safety. In the category of Leadership and Contribution to Road Safety Culture, Pernod Ricard was recognized for its programs against driving under the influence of alcohol, while Diageo received accolades for its awareness campaigns. Santo Domingo Motors was acknowledged for its collaboration with Intrant, the Ministry of Education, and Motor Crédito in the 'Youth in Transit' program.
In the category of Business Management of Road Safety, companies such as Industrias San Miguel, Cervecería Nacional Dominicana, and Bepensa were distinguished for their monitoring programs, training initiatives, and technological innovations aimed at reducing risks in their operations. This recognition not only highlights successful practices but also serves as a model for other organizations aiming to enhance their own road safety measures.
Collaborative Efforts for Safer Roads
The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, and international organizations. Key figures such as Jean Todt, the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety, and Ydanis Rodríguez, former commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, emphasized the need for stronger partnerships to achieve the goals of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030.
Eddy Olivares, the Minister of Labor, reiterated that fostering a preventive culture within workplaces not only protects workers but also contributes to the sustainable development of the country. This collaborative approach is essential for creating a safer environment for all road users in the Dominican Republic.
