Government Aims to Train One Million Dominicans in Artificial Intelligence

During the launch event at the National Palace, President Abinader emphasized that the goal of the RD Inteligente program is not to turn a million Dominicans into programmers but to enhance their existing skills. He stated, “We want them to be better at what they already know how to do.” This approach aims to empower professionals across various fields, from educators to healthcare workers, enabling them to utilize AI tools to improve their work.

For instance, teachers will be able to enhance their teaching methods, doctors can access new tools for patient care, and small business owners will learn how to optimize their sales and management strategies. This comprehensive training initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach to workforce development in the Dominican Republic.

The RD Inteligente program will offer a range of training options, from basic education to specialized courses in automation, data analysis, and programming. This structured learning path is designed to cater to the diverse needs of the workforce across the nation. The program will also provide internationally recognized certifications from major tech companies such as Amazon, Google, Cisco, and Microsoft, ensuring that participants gain valuable credentials that enhance their employability.

Jimmy Rosario, the rector of the Instituto Tecnológico de Las Américas (ITLA), explained that the platform will feature 28 training routes tailored to various professions and sectors. This infrastructure aims to ensure that the benefits of AI education reach every corner of the country, promoting inclusivity and accessibility in technology education.

As the world increasingly embraces AI, the Dominican Republic is positioning itself as a technological leader in Latin America and the Caribbean. Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza, remarked that AI is no longer a technology of the future, but a current reality reshaping how citizens work, learn, and solve problems. This initiative is part of a broader strategy known as the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (ENIA), aimed at fostering innovation and strengthening digital capabilities.

By investing in AI education and infrastructure, the Dominican government is not only aiming to modernize the state but also to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (mipymes). This commitment to technology is expected to enhance the country's economic landscape and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
